The impact stories, programmes and achievements highlighted on this page showcase the collective professional experience of OHAAN's leadership, technical experts and advisory team, acquired through previous roles in government, academia, development partners, NGOs and other implementing institutions.
Unless specifically labelled as "OHAAN Direct Impact" or "Implemented by OHAAN", the accomplishments presented should not be interpreted as projects delivered by OHAAN as an organization. They represent the prior professional achievements of individual team members before joining OHAAN and are included to demonstrate the expertise, technical capacity and field experience that now informs OHAAN's work.

Human Health
Stewardship • Infection Prevention • Surveillance
In Wajir County, our team built Kenya's first WHO-aligned county-wide Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programme from the ground up—expanding from a single facility to all 188 health facilities across six sub-counties serving over 100,000 people. Alongside this work, the team designed Kenya's first ASAL-specific antimicrobial stewardship framework and Kala-azar treatment guidelines, leading to measurable reductions in patient mortality. Since 2020, stewardship implementation in Makueni County has expanded to all 14 sub-county hospitals. At national level, our experts contributed to Kenya's National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance while training health leaders across 17 counties.

Water Systems & Sanitation
Working with the Water Resources Authority, ILRI and NEMA, our team produced Kenya's first structured environmental antimicrobial resistance map by sampling wastewater and surface water across 37 sites. The project also recommended the country's first formal cross-sector surveillance agreement connecting health, water and environmental institutions. Beyond research, our specialists have trained emergency medical teams from multiple African countries in outbreak response and safe water management.

Reducing Resistance at the Source
More than 1,000 smallholder farmers in Kirinyaga County were trained in responsible agrochemical use, helping reduce practices that contribute to antimicrobial resistance within food systems. The programme strengthened organic coffee and banana value chains while supporting food safety facilities and farmer cooperatives. Our experts also contributed to Kenya's first community-level antimicrobial prescribing guideline extending into agricultural settings.

Where Our Work Is Heading Next
Through partnerships with Kenya's National Public Health Institute and national One Health stakeholders, our team has already contributed to integrated surveillance thinking that combines human, animal and environmental health. OHAAN's next phase will establish Kenya's first integrated human–livestock–environment baseline dataset across two contrasting counties—one peri-urban and one pastoral—to strengthen evidence-based One Health interventions. This is only the beginning of our livestock journey, and this section will continue growing as implementation progresses.
