Strengthening surveillance, institutional preparedness, and clinical response capacity for Candida auris and invasive Candida infections in selected Kenyan hospitals through awareness, detection protocols, and infection prevention interventions.

Project Background

Kenyan hospitals faced a major gap in systematic surveillance and clinical management protocols for Candida auris and other invasive Candida infections. The absence of effective detection systems, limited awareness among healthcare workers, and weak institutional preparedness posed significant patient safety risks.

Immunocompromised patients were especially vulnerable to invasive fungal infections, while delayed diagnosis and inadequate infection prevention systems increased the risk of transmission within healthcare facilities.

The project was initiated to strengthen institutional response capacity, improve fungal infection surveillance, and support early detection and management of Candida auris infections in selected Kenyan hospitals.
