Orangi Gavin is a clinical pharmacist specializing in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), and oncology pharmacy. He leads county-level AMS implementation with a strong focus on optimizing surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, improving antimicrobial use, and strengthening infection prevention and control practices across healthcare facilities.
County AMS focal person with over four years’ experience leading stewardship programs, mentoring multidisciplinary teams, and integrating AMS into routine clinical care.
Contributed to improved rational antibiotic use, reduced inappropriate ceftriaxone utilization, costed AMS interventions, and strengthened stewardship practices in referral and county hospitals through audits, guideline implementation, and capacity building.
Participated in the development and national launch of key AMR-related documents, including Kenya’s Antibiotic Use Guidelines, the Guideline on Control and Containment of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms, and the National AMR Surveillance Reports. Actively involved in partner-supported AMS projects in Kenya.
Leads and supports implementation research on antimicrobial stewardship and surgical antibiotic prophylaxis across multiple counties, focusing on context-specific, pharmacist-led solutions to address AMR in low- and middle-income healthcare settings.
