A pioneering environmental antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance initiative addressing the lack of standardized protocols, baseline data, and regulatory access for ESBL-producing bacteria detection in wastewater, surface water, and industrial discharge systems in Kenya.
Prior to this intervention, Kenya lacked standardized environmental protocols for detecting ESBL-producing bacteria in wastewater and surface water systems. Sampling methods were inconsistent, and no validated SOPs existed.
There was no baseline environmental AMR data from wastewater treatment plants or receiving water bodies, limiting national understanding of resistance transmission pathways.
Access restrictions to pharmaceutical facilities and selected hospitals created critical surveillance blind spots, preventing full mapping of AMR hotspots from healthcare and industrial sources.
